Polarization is a filter. The lenses in sunglasses are fixed at an angle that only allows vertically polarized light to enter.
When light reflects off of a surface (like snow or a lake or a road or your car\'s hood) it gets polarized. The E-fields in the E-M wave line up in a certain way. Anyway, you see better if glare from those reflections is eliminated. So polarized sunglasses cut those polarizations and allow the other ones, giving you better vision in glary conditions. |
